By combining the unique, contrasting fashion styles of the East and the West Coast, Noah Hornik ’15 attempts to create a signature style that channels both the laid-back vibe of his California home and preppier New England.
Hailing from Palo Alto, CA, Hornik describes his blended style as “Cali meets East Coast.”
“I’ve cared about fashion for as long as I can remember. Back in elementary school I was obsessed with having just the right skate shoes to go with my black skinny jeans,” said Hornik. “Then in middle school, I started to wear boat shoes and even skinnier skinny jeans. Over time I’ve transformed, but I guess the one thing that has always stuck with me is the skinny jeans. They’re a staple,” he said.
True to his word, Hornik can often be seen around campus wearing colored skinny jeans, paired with relaxed American Apparel hoodies, checkered button-downs with skinny ties or sharp, classic dark blazers, depending on his mood.
“Interestingly enough, my fashion definitely originates with my mother” said Hornik. “She knows how to combine very typical, plain pieces with much more sophisticated articles of clothing to create really interesting looks.”
“There’s a fine line that my mother walks well,” Hornik continued. “I don’t want to be too bland, but I don’t want to be out there to the point of absurdity.”
According to Hornik, one his more quirky apparels is a floral print nylon jacket made by a company in Amsterdam.
“He dresses like he wants to be a hipster. Then you get to know him and you realize; he actually is a hipster. He’s defined his own style and doesn’t just follow the latest trend,” said Zelly Atlan ‘13.
Always excited to experiment with his clothing styles, Hornik is not afraid to shy away from the bland; in fact, he embraces the interesting pieces that the numerous thrift shops of San Francisco have to offer, drawing inspiration from the energy and culture in his environment.
“As cliché as it sounds, the world is also my fashion inspiration. Every day I’ll be walking around campus and see something interesting and new that someone is wearing, and I’ll say to myself ‘I want to try that,’” said Hornik. “If I’m in New York, I’ll look around and I suddenly start dressing everyday like I’m attending an art opening.”
Hornik’s typical outfit consists of a fitted navy button-down covered in an ivory swallow patterns, a dark blue peacoat with gold button accents, rolled-up light wash jeans, off-white boat shoes with navy linings, topped with his signature striped Herschel canvas backpack and a colorful pair of sunglasses.
“If you had to look in my closet, you’d find both the classic navy blazer popular in the East Coast and an array of vintage-looking varsity jackets from the West Coast. That sums up my sense of style in a nutshell,” said Hornik.
