Girls Softball Wins Home Opener against Tilton in Sudden-Death Round

Gabriella Potter ’27 hits three-run homer to tie the game.

Andover: 7 – Tilton: 6

Down by three in the seventh inning, with two people on base, Gabriella Potter ’27 stepped up to bat. Potter hit a three-run home run, tying the game and forcing it into a sudden-death tiebreaker. After coming back from the three-run deficit, Girls Softball triumphed over Tilton School in extra innings on April 4 for a nail-biting home opener.

Although Girls Softball started the game slowly, the team fought its way back for a win. Potter commented that even though the team did not play its best initially, it gained momentum and pulled through.

“It was a really great first game. In the beginning, we were moving a bit slow, making some errors defensively, while offensively, we were struggling to get the bat on the ball and make solid contact. However, we held our own in that game, and I was really excited with our performance. We picked each other up, we kept each other going, and we played really competitive softball, which was awesome,” said Potter.

The team proved its prowess in high-pressure situations and its toughness in coming back from a deficit. Ava Davey ’25 commented on how the team was resilient and focused throughout the whole game, hitting well in the most important parts of the game.

Davey said, “Everyone was locked and ready to step up to every challenge that we faced. We performed really well in high pressure situations. Our defense was solid. We hit well in the sixth and seventh inning, our communication was up, and everyone was ready to go.”

Davey also noted her favorite play of the game: a three-run game-tying home run by Potter to send the game into overtime.

“My favorite moment of the game was when Gabby Potter hit a home run to tie the game up and bring the two other runners home. Everyone was just so excited. Even the other team was also blown away by how great the hit was,” said Davey.

Although they have only had one official game so far, the players described the team culture as energetic and supportive. Davey noted that the team’s selfless mindset and constant uplifting attitude have helped the season start strong.

“Our team is really special. Everyone brings something unique to the table, and I constantly feel supported by my teammates and coaches. Everyone works hard and loves the game, and it honestly doesn’t get better than that. On our team, it is evident that no one plays for themselves, but everyone plays for each other, and that mindset has helped start the season strong,” said Davey.

According to Potter, the strong relationships in the team and with the coaches sprouted during its Florida pre-season trip.

Potter said, “Even during preseason in Florida, we developed a really great relationship with our coaches and with each other as well. We have been really communicative, and it has been great to learn and train with them in the offseason.”

The team’s supportive nature is a hallmark of its culture. Sydney Moore ’28 commented on the team’s constant support, especially in the toughest moments.

“We are incredibly supportive throughout all of our games. We’re always cheering for one another, even when we are down. We will encourage each other on the sidelines, the people who are on the bench and the people who are up to bat, everyone is cheering for everyone and being super excited,” Moore said.

Potter also added that the team has set itself up well for the season. She mentioned her excitement for the season ahead.

“Our first game was nothing short of exciting. Our defense has been great, the outfield has been great as well, so I’m really excited to see what this season has to hold,” Potter said.

Girls Softball faced Governor’s Academy on Thursday, Buckingham Browne & Nichols on Friday, and will play Milton on Saturday.
