Baseball: Wins With ‘Perfect Pitch’ Against Marianapolis yet Falls to Dexter Southfield

Baseball scores 11 times against Marianapolis.

4/5 – Andover: 11, Marianapolis: 0

4/9 – Andover: 0, Dexter Southfield: 1

On Saturday, Baseball (2-1) overwhelmed Marianapolis in an 11-0 victory. On Wednesday, though, it fell to Dexter Southfield in a gritty 1-0 loss. Against Marianopolis, Michael Gilligan ’26 pitched a five-inning shutout and Luke Gallo ’25 hit an equally impressive homerun. The team, against Dexter Southfield, displayed a strong performance but lost in a close game.

On Saturday facing Marianapolis, according to Caleb Penn ’27, all members of the team contributed to its decisive victory. Penn also noted the worthwhile preparation that Head Coach Kevin Graber put the team through.

“We got off to a really good start and we really fell upon the systems that [Kevin Graber], and our coaches put in place. The energy was amazing, we kept the energy up, and really stayed together. We had a really good team effort to jump on the team early and all together we played some really good baseball. It was awesome to get out there with the boys and [win]. Everyone did a really good job pitching in,” said Penn.

The team’s pitchers, who include Michael Gilligan ’26, Rishvith Kandru ’25, and Michael Doherty ’27, delivered strong performances, maintaining a clean score sheet. Luke Gallo ’25 celebrated the brilliance of the entire pitching rotation.

“Michael Gilligan started the game and pitched five innings, a shutout, no runs. Rishvith Kandru and Michael Doherty also shut it down in the last two innings. They pounded the zone, trusted their defense, and trusted our catcher, Logan Umbach ’25, behind the dish. It was really cool to see them go out there and shove, and it really helps the team push further. It obviously helps us in the future because we know we can trust those guys on the mound, and we can trust those guys as a team because those are the guys we want to go out and compete with. So, I would say the pitching staff as a whole were the key players for us,” said Gallo.

Baseball played a well-rounded game against Marianpolis, showcasing excellence on offense and defense. William Lennon ’25 described two key plays and explained the momentum that those plays built.

“Luke Gallo’s home run was definitely a big one; that was a really big moment for us as a team and for him, being his first home run. Michael Gilligan striking out the batters to end the fourth inning with a runner on second and third was a huge moment for us, keeping those runs from scoring and maintaining that momentum. It definitely helped big time,” said Lennon.

Against Dexter Southfield, Baseball played a strong game but fell short in a close loss. Miles O’Neal ’28 discussed the team’s performance and narrow defeat.

“The game was pretty good. We lost 1-0 but it was a tight game and the only run they scored was on a single home run on their side. We made a few minor mistakes but besides that it was a pretty clean game,” said O’Neal.

According to O’Neal, Gallo, against Dexter Southfield, delivered a notable play on defense at shortstop.

O’Neal said, “Luke Gallo had a ball hit to shortstop and there was a runner on second and third. He threw out the runner at third base, caught him in a rundown and he got him out. Which was a really key play because it kept the score 0-0. I think that was the best defensive play of the game.”

Baseball faced Belmont Hill on Thursday. It will battle Bridgton Academy on Friday and Worcester Academy on Wednesday.
