Andover Girls Tennis looks to continue its two year undefeated streak this season.
In the past, strong leadership from number one on the ladder Katherine Lee ’13, as well as the team’s depth, has allowed it to pull through in tight matches.
With six returning players, the team has high hopes for the upcoming season.
The only new player on the team is Isabella Haegg ’16, who is expected to play in the top half of the ladder.
“From what I have seen so far, we have a strong base of veterans that will help bring leadership. They are all very strong returners, and I am excited to get the chance to keep improving upon their experience,” said Coach Andrew Zappala.
This will be Zappala’s first year coaching. Last year’s coach, Deborah Chase, is on leave.
“With our returning and new talent, I hope for just as a successful season as last year. I will miss being a part of it,” said Chase.
Returners include Engel, Campbell Howe ’14, Lee, Mackenzie Strabala ’13, Camille Price ’15 and Katherine Tobeason ’14.
Zappala expects hard work and determination from the team and believes if these expectations are met, the team can be victorious again.
“I am mainly focused on getting girls to buy into my system of coaching, and I believe strongly that the effort we put in as a team will take care of the results.” said Zappala.
The team is focusing on doubles and has been practicing its skills to prepare for this season.
Zappala also has the team working on its net game and finishing points as well as improving the overall team strategy.
“I’m really excited for this season because we have great depth on the team, especially with some new players this year. In the past, we’ve come close to winning the New England’s, and I think this year we have a real shot at going all the way,” said MJ Engel ’13.
The team kicks off its season on April 12 against Groton.
