Dempsey ’12 Secures Top 10 Finish

Co-Captain Colton Dempsey ’12, Christian Vallis ’14, Sven Lerner ’13 and James Palmer ’14 represented Andover Wrestling in the National Prep Tournament at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania this past Friday and Saturday. With 32 wrestlers in each weight class vying for the title, the caliber of competition was extremely high.

Ninth seed Dempsey, who was undefeated this season up until his final tournament, finished his Andover career by placing eighth in the 152lb weight class. Dempsey recorded four wins and three losses. Dempsey qualified for the national tournament all four years and placed as high as fifth last year.

Vallis, who also attended the tournament last year and took eighth, finished in the top 12 this year in the 120lb weight class. He won three of his five matches, but his two losses prevented him from regaining his All-American status from last year as one of top eight wrestlers. Vallis is one of the team’s two Co-Captains for next season.

Unseeded Lerner, competing in the 138lb weight class for his second consecutive year at Andover, lost his first match and won his second before being knocked out with a second loss. Lerner is the team’s other Co-Captain for next season.

A new face to the National Prep Tournament, unseeded Palmer at 170lb lost to two talented wrestlers who were both seeded higher than him. Palmer will look to build on the experience for next year.

Looking to next season, Vallis said, “We will have a very young team next year, with just four Seniors returning. Hopefully through camps over the summer and team bonding throughout the year, we will be able to come back strong. It’s been a great honor to wrestle with the likes of Colton, [Co-Captain Brandon] Sneider [’12] and [Anthony] Tedesco [’12], and we will miss them greatly in the years to come. They’ve taught me a lot and really allowed me to mature into the leader I am now on this team.”
