Last week, students witnessed Barbara Chase raise her field hockey stick in Commons for the last time. Soon, the field hockey stick will be graduating along with Mrs. Chase. As she moves on to life after Andover, the field hockey stick that has come to symbolize a day of liberation to so many students will be retired.
According to Mrs. Chase, the stick will be entered into the school archives with an engraving that reads “Presented to Phillips Academy Head of School, Barbara Landis Chase. With grateful appreciation for the care and concern you have shown to us. The Class of 2001.”
While this photo of Head of School Day, from the January 30, 1998 issue of The Phillipian, was taken long before this engraving was written, the sentiment has remained largely the same.
This continuity has been a steady force in the lives of every Andover student since 1994.
We couldn’t agree more with the Class of 2001 when we say to Mrs. Chase: thank you for a brilliant 18 years.
