Andover Girls Tennis ended their regular season with a 7-2 win against Exeter to cap off an undefeated season. Last Friday, Andover destroyed a strong Andover High team in a scrimmage.
“Playing Andover High School is a tradition for the girls varsity team, and its always a light-spirited and fun day. This year the Andover High was the strongest I’ve seen it in my four years, and hope they do well in their season too.”
In their game against Exeter, Katherine Lee ’13 squeaked out a win in an extraordinarily close match at number one singles 7-6, 7-5. Both Stacia Vladimirova ’11 and Elizabeth Kelly ’11 pulled out straight set wins, while Mackenzie Strabala ’13 won 6-0 6-3. Katherine Tobeason ’14 blew past her opponent, only dropping one game with a 6-0 6-1 score.
There was similar success on the doubles courts. Vladimirova ’11 and Kelly won 8-5. Borkeny Sambou ’12 and MJ Engel ’13 had to fight harder for their doubles win. After a slow start, the pair emerged with a 8-6 win.
Engel said, “Both Friday’s match and today’s match were tests of patience for Borkeny and I. We were confident coming into the match, and had to maintain our level of play to pull through with the win. I’m really excited for NEPSACs because last year Borkeny and I came in second and we’re pumped to go for it all this year. Our team has been playing amazingly all season and I hope we can kick it up another notch to win it all on Saturday”
Kelly said, “Today was a huge win for us, and this season has been amazing. It has been a goal of the team all season to finish undefeated and we are so excited and proud to have succeeded. Finishing by beating Exeter was also an added bonus.”
The team will head to the NEPSAC tournament this weekend with an undefeated record.
Kelly said, “As it gets closer and closer, we are all eagerly anticipating the tournament and crossing our fingers for good draws and good weather this weekend.”
