Andover Stays Afloat

In one of the most crucial games of the season, Andover Girls Water Polo played fantastic defense to earn an 8-7 victory over Deerfield on Saturday. This set the team up for a chance to clinch a berth in a play-in game with another win over Deerfield next Saturday. The 9-17 loss to Choate later in the afternoon and the 6-9 loss to Exeter on Wednesday brought Andover’s record to 5-6.

The week before, the team went 1-1, beating Williston Northampton 13-6, but falling to Loomis Chaffe 13-18. Julia Torabi ’12 played well, netting five goals on ten shots against Williston Northampton.

The Deerfield game was a defensive battle, but Andover managed to net several goals at crucial points in the game to give the team a small lead. Andover’s tenacious defense protected this lead, and Andover escaped with the nail-biting 8-7 victory. Torabi said, “It was one of our best games thus far. Our defense played extremely well, and our offense was able to produce in crucial times. Everyone gave their best effort and it paid off in the end.”

Following the huge victory over Deerfield, Andover matched up against a talented Choate team. Choate’s early firepower gave the opponent the lead, and Andover never climbed back into the game despite consistent offense. Choate’s offense never let up and the game ended in a 9-17 Andover loss.

Torabi summed up the game, saying, “Choate was one of the best teams we played this season. We just could not find an answer to their impressive scoring attack.”

Despite putting six goals past Exeter’s goalie, Andover suffered a tough 6-9 loss on Wednesday. Torabi played a fabulous game, netting three goals to lead Andover’s offensive. Amelia Danovitch ’13 who said, “Julia [Torabi] had a very good game offensively. She was able to find the weak spot in the Exeter goalie and exploit it. She lobbed the ball from the outside which caught the goalie off guard.”

Andover generated this offense by jumping out on fast breaks and putting shots on net. Torabi said, “Our fast breaks led to shots and even against such a good goalie, if you put up enough attempts, she is going to eventually make a mistake.”

Despite the losses to Exeter and Choate, Andover can earn a berth to the play-in game with another win against Deerfield on Saturday.
