Oh ’12, Leung ’11, and Smachlo ’11 Sweep 200 Yard Freestyle; Andover Wins 10 of 12 Events

With four combined wins for Jun Oh ’12 and Alex Nanda ’11, Andover took down a very strong Deerfield team, winning 118-66. For the fourth consecutive meet, Andover won the 200 medley relay with ease, as the team of Co-Captain Matt Mahoney ’11, Conor Deveney ’11, Alex Smachlo ’11 and Oh took first in a time of 1:39.17. Andover’s second team of Derrick Choi ’12, Didi Peng ’12, Co-Captain Ben Morris ’11, and Andrew Xuan ’13 finished second in 1:41.56. Oh led the following sweep of the 200 yard freestyle, taking first in 1:44.73, followed by Jon Leung ’11, who took second and Smachlo who finished third. Mahoney won the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:01.99, while Nanda later held off strong Deerfield opposition in the 50 freestyle, taking first place in a time of 22.57 seconds. Peng took third place in the 50 freestyle. Before diving began, Andover had taken a 45-17 lead. In the diving event, Tommy Kramer ’11 faced off against the defending New England champion. Although he fell short of first place, Kramer established a new personal best with 252.41 points, taking second place. After swimming resumed, Andover continued its domination. Deveney ’11 narrowly fell to Deerfield’s top swimmer in the 100 butterfly, with a time of 53.20, only 0.1 seconds behind first place. Nanda ended Deerfield’s two event streak, winning the 100 freestyle in 48.84 seconds. Leung finished in second place, which Michael Camarda ’14 barely missed completing the Andover sweep, as he finished fourth and lowered his unofficial freshman record in the race to 49.62. Oh capped off an already impressive afternoon in the 500 freestyle, winning the event in 4:40.73 and setting a new 11th grade record. Justin Wang ’13 also swam well, dropping his time by over ten seconds, finishing in 5:00.90. Later, the Choi, Peng, Leung, and Nanda won the 200 freestyle relay by almost five seconds. The team of Camarda, Ben Morris ’11, Smachlo, and Cameron Phillips ’11 followed taking second. Andover also dominated in the 100 yard backstroke, as Deveney took first in 54.03 while Choi hit the wall second at 55.86. Mahoney and Peng took first and second respectively in the 100 breaststroke with times of 1:00.74 and 1:02.73. In the final event of the day, Andover ended on a winning note as the relay team of Nanda, Camarda, Mahoney, Oh beat Deerfield with a time of 3:21.24.. Morris was pleased with the team’s performance, as he said, “The meet went exceptionally well for the team. Deerfield is one of our major competitors and yet we still won by a significant margin.” He also noted, “Conor Deveney ’11 and Alex Nanda ’11 both did remarkably well. Jun Oh 0’12 had a phenomenal 500 freestyle, as usual. Matt Mahoney also had an incredible 100 breast.” Next week, the Big Blue race against Hopkins at home.
