Lenzo ’12 Wins Crucial Match at St. Mark’s

After going down 0-2 in the St. Marks match, T.J. Lenzo ’12 put together a remarkable comeback, winning the next two games, and eventually taking the match. The team ended up winning the away match against St. Marks 6-1. Returner Hunter Schlacks ’11 said, “The match against St. Marks went very well. Everyone on the team played more intelligent squash than usual, and we pulled out a victory because of it.” The only match Andover lost was at the one-seed game. Schlacks’s St. Marks opponent was exceptionally fast, which made it very difficult for Andover to win points. Schlacks’s kill shots were off as well, which contributed to his loss, but overall it was an overall solid performance for the Andover Squash team. The next day, Andover traveled to Nobles, one of the best squash programs in the division. Nobles won the match 7-0, but the team played exceptionally well considering the talented opposition.  This Wednesday, Andover went up against a very experienced St. Paul’s team. Andover suffered yet another loss, 6-1. The only Andover win was by newcomer Kung Woo Kim ’14. The freshman showed his tremendous potential and talent in a very impressive win. Andover’s biggest problem this year has been its lack of experience, as most of the players on the team have never played varsity squash before this year, and many have been playing seriously for less than two years. With the lack of experience considered, the young team has been relatively successful. Much of the success can be attributed to Coach Tom Hodgson who has shared his extensive knowledge about squash. The last few matches have displayed great promise from the younger players, and the veterans have taken notice. Andover’s upcoming opponents are going to be challenging but will provide opportunities for the young Andover squad to produce some much needed victories. This Saturday, Andover will be playing Belmont Hill, Choate and Westminister who all have very talented squash programs. Now that the season is well under way, the Andover team is building momentum and is steadily moving along the road to success.
