“Energy and crazed excitement!” is the theme of the 2009 Dance Open that will debut this weekend. The Dance Open is an annual show that displays a collection of student-performed and student-choreographed dances. Jessica Frey ’09 and Marianna Jordan ’09 laboriously organized this year’s fabulous show with help from Erin Strong, Instructor in Dance. The choreographers have been working on their dances with Frey and Jordan’s help since they held auditions towards the end of the winter term, and then again in spring term to select the dances that would be featured in the show. The show will open in Steinbach Lobby for one show on Friday at 7:30 p.m., for two shows on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and will have a Sunday matinee at 2:00 p.m. “I think that Dance Open is a great opportunity for dancers to show off their hard work and talent while also giving PA students the chance to get a small glimpse of the many intricate styles of dance,” said participating dancer Madeleine Kim ’12. Viewers should prepare to see a myriad of diverse techniques, themes and types of dance that vary in each and every different dance. Supriya Jain ’12 will perform in an exotic Bollywood-inspired dance, and Georgia Pelletier ’11 will comment on societal conformation in a robotic-styled dance. SLAM’s dynamic and typical loud steps mirror the energy of the song ‘Right Round,’ and Kristina Rex ’11 will have a fierce choreography battle with the emotional lyrics of ‘Painted Black.’ The results should be a captivating and poignant dance. The song selected by Hypnotiq, ‘Touch and Go,’ is very upbeat and bold. The number demands energy from the dance members, which they each deliver. Katie Fanikos ’11 will perform a song medley entitled ‘Drop the Beat’ which will captivate viewers with a whirlwind of enthusiasm and fast moving eight counts. “We always have more fun if the audience is energetic and enthusiastic,” said co-head of Hypnotiq wCaroline O’Sullivan ’10. “Dance Open is amazing in that it is an opportunity open to all students and this brings a wide range of talented students and styles of movement together to create a great show,” said Brenna Liponis ’10. Many of PA’s dance groups, such as SLAM, Andover Dance Group, Hypnotiq and Blue Strut have all organized dances for the show along with a plethora of skilled student choreographers. The products of their year’s hard work will be proudly displayed, and will be sure to deliver an energetic, crazy and exciting time.
