Ultimate Has Big Shoes to Fill After Loss of Seniors to Graduation

A combination of strong senior leadership and experienced young players will be the key to success for the Andover Varsity Ultimate team this season. The team is led by great instruction from coaches Scott Hoenig and William Scott. Returning varsity players include Thomas Armstrong ’11, Duncan Crystal ’10, Alec Weiss ’11, Turner Shaw ’11, Alex Choi ’09, Eli Grober ’09, Joe Liotta ’10 and Josh Feng ’10. These members are expected to have a great impact on the team’s success this season. With this large number of returners, Andover looks to create more team unity and improve on last year’s accomplishments. The team competes in both the New England Prep School Ultimate League (NEPSUL) and the New England High School Ultimate League, giving it strong competition. Andover will try to condition its players for the back and forth action that goes on in an Ultimate game. Coach Hoenig and Coach Scott will focus on keeping the frisbee players in good shape so they can keep up with all the teams in both leagues. Many returning players will have another year on varsity after this season, which will play a big part in helping Andover build and grow this year. The coaches also hope this will help foster stronger team unity. Many uppers and lowers will have the opportunity to form bonds with each other, due to the three years together on the Ultimate team. Both Coach Hoenig and Coach Scott are knowledgeable of the Ultimate rules and the fine points of an Ultimate game. Together they will lead a team of young, promising players who look to improve and compete at a level with teams in both leagues of competition. Throughout the season Andover will face tough competition, but even with a relatively young team they hope to be successful. One of the best things about Ultimate, players agree, is the level of dedication each athlete has to the sport. Many Ultimate players are found tossing frisbees with fellow teammates in their spare time, which works to create strong bonds and a sense of each player’s strengths and weaknesses. The Ultimate team will play its first game at Newton North on April 8th at 3:30 PM.
