Wrestling Continues to Win with 5-1 Record; Freshmen Performances Help Secure Victories

With strong performances from the freshman class, Andover wrestling continued their strong season in the past week improving to 5-1.? Coming off of a victory against a deep Nobles team, Andover proceeded to beat its next two opponents of Choate Rosemary Hall (46-19) and Andover High School (60-15) last Saturday and Wednesday, respectively.? Against Choate, Andover won 9 of 14 matches. Andover took an early 12-0 lead, and then continued to a 28-9 gap, starting with back-to-back wins by freshman Brandon Sneider ’12 (who beat a returning Class A place finisher in a major decision) and Colt Dempsey ’11.? Duncan Crystal ’10 added to the lead with a pin in the first period.?Soon after, Anthony Tedesco ’12 recorded his very first win as an Andover wrestler when he beat another returning Class A place finisher at 140lbs 10-5.? Sam Dodge ’09 then beat his opponent 12-5 at 171lbs, and Co-Captain Shaun Stuer ’09 finished the meet with a pin at 189lbs.?Against Andover High, Andover picked up 8 pins on the day against a developing Golden Warrior wrestling program. Despite the smooth road over the past week, these two meets were important to the success of the team, but quite simply they come nowhere near the challenge and intensity of the upcoming championship rematch with defending champs Northfield Mount Hermon.? The NMH Hoggers are currently ranked first in the league with Andover in second place. This highly anticipated matchup will bring out the best from both powerhouses, and will set the tone for the rest of the season.?NMH last year posted a dual meet record of 21-1. This outstanding record was accompanied by their New England Championship title, a Class A Championship, first-place finishes at three major tournaments, and 11th out of 120 schools at the National Prep Championships. ? In addition, Andover finished second to NMH at the Class A Championships last year, and a chance at revenge could not come soon enough. The team has been continuing their strenuous practices, but they have practiced with a completely different mindset.? Their goal to work toward during practice has been simply to crush NMH. While over the past season NMH has been one-upping Andover’s impressive performances, this year’s team is displaying depth which the school has not seen in a long time.
