Levene ’09 Breaks School Record in 3000 in Promising Quad-Meet

This Saturday, Andover competed in a quad-meet with Exeter, Milton, and St. Pauls. Andover performed phenomenally, and Head Coaches Corbin Lang and Lou Bernieri grew more optimistic for Interschols in May. The Girls team took the meet and edged out Exeter 70-61. The victory is a testament to the hard work the spring squad is committed to maintaining and its natural talent. Andover gained crucial points by placing in the field events: Melissa Ferrari ’10 won the High Jump, Colleen Flanagan ’10 took the Pole Vault, Hailee Minor ’08 placed in both the Discus and Shot Put, while Alexis Dawkins ’10 did the same in the Long, Triple Jump, and later in the 400. The running events proved just as successful for Andover. Abby Levene ’09 and Stephanie Moroney ’09 who both placed in the 1500, but Levene’s 3000-meter run will go down in history. Her time of 10:05 broke the school record previously held by Melissa Donais ’01 by 11 seconds. Anna Fang ’10 won the 800, and Annie McDonough ’09 placed in four events: The Triple Jump, 4×100 relay, and both the 110 and 300 Hurdles. Captain Simone Hill ’08 came second in the 100 dash in a photo finish, but nevertheless retaliated to win the 200. The Boys team, while coming in a close second to Exeter, are looking towards the championships with optimism as well. Lowers Tyler Bond ’10 and Alexander Muresanu ’10 placed in the Javelin, while Mike Bernieri ’10 placed in the Shot Put. The upper trio of Charlie Dong ’09, Peter Ly ’09, and Malin Adams ’09 swept the Pole Vault. Frank Pinto ’08 and Eddie Zhang ’09 both placed in the Triple Jump. Andover Boys took both relays, which was crucial in the final result. The 4×1 team of Chad Hollis ’08, Chase Potter ’09, Captain Lou Tejada ’08, and Mike Donelan ’08 came across the finish line just over half of a second before the rest. Potter and Hollis were members of the 4×4 squad as well, while Captain Tejada and Donelan both placed in the 200, along with Teddy Louis ’09. Tejada also placed in the 100. Corbin Tognoni ’08 won the high hurdles by over a second, shocking his opponents. On the distance side, Trevor Gullick-Stutz placed in the 400. Charlie Ganner ’10 took the 1500 and came a tenth of a second away from taking the 3000 as well. The success of both Andover teams last weekend is a triumph they hope to repeat this Saturday at NMH.
