Balanced Offense Paces Girls Basketball’s Attack; Lackluster Defense Gives Up 65 to Worcester

Despite double digit scoring efforts by Catherine Coppinger ’09 and Captain Kelly Fox ’08, Andover Girls Varsity Basketball could not rally to beat Worcester Academy, suffering its second consecutive loss. Andover hosted Worcester on Saturday, hoping to rebound from a tough loss last week against Nobles. With the two teams seeded close to each other, this was a pivotal game for Andover’s position in the standings. The beginning of the first half was more or less equal, with both teams battling neck and neck. At the 3:45 mark, Captain Fox drained two foul shots along with a three pointer to tie the score at 24-24. However, Worcester powered through the Andover defense, scoring 11 to put them ahead at half time, 25-35, while silencing the Andover offense. The second half was Andover’s opportunity to close the gap between Worcester and themselves, and at the start of the second half it appeared as though they would do just that. However, Worcester answered Andover’s intensity, putting any hopes of victory out of Andover’s reach. Ultimately, Andover fell by a score of 49-65. Andover lost its second consecutive game, leaving its season record at 7-5. Despite the loss, some Andover players managed some notable performances. Among them were 10-point efforts by both Coppinger and Captain Fox, as well as a nine-point contribution by Kourtney Diperno ’09 and a seven-rebound performance by Annie McDonough ’09. Added Captain Fox, “It was a tough loss for us, but we hope to rebound in the game upcoming against Brooks.” One important match-up awaits the team in the near future: the Exeter game. Although Andover cruised to two wins last season, the team is certainly expecting a fierce battle against its rival. The first meeting between Andover and Exeter Girls Varsity Basketball squads will be tomorrow, February 2nd at Exeter. Last season’s match-ups both ended with Andover on top in two very exciting games. This year’s contests should be no different. With February rapidly approaching, Andover is getting poised to stay strong through the second half of its season. The team looks to improve defensively as they strive towards greatness in the final month of the season.
