Lokitis ’06 Breaks PA Scoring Record

Scoring 1,000 points in a career is a goal that is rarely accomplished by most college basketball players. In the case of Joey Lokitis ’06, that feat was accomplished during his senior season on the Andover Boys Varsity Basketball team. Lokitis became the first male Andover athlete to pass the 1,000 mark during Andover’s 71-49 win over Choate on January 7th. Although he finished the game with 30 points, Lokitis sunk his 1,000 point with a free throw a few minutes into the first quarter. Lokitis said, “It didn’t really hit me until after the game when I actually thought about it. When you’re in the heat of the game you don’t really realize thing like this. It’s an honor to score 1,000 points and I’m really proud.” Lokitis then proceeded to break the all-time school record held by Becky Dowling ’94 when he surpassed 1,108 points during Andover’s 71-56 win over Tabor. Lokitis, this year’s basketball Captain and a 4 year letter winner, would not have gotten this far if not for his relentless determination and outstanding work ethic. Teammate Will Sherrill ’07 said, “Joey has brought the team together in a really short time as captain. His work ethic is astounding, and he sets the standard for the rest of the team to follow.” When asked if he felt any different after scoring 1,000 points, Lokitis replied, “It’s just a statistic. I haven’t really changed as a player. It’s just an award that doesn’t really have any effect of me. I think it’s really cool that now for the rest of my life I’ll be remembered as a thousand point scorer.” Lokitis added, “With this team that we have I really want to make the playoffs. I feel that I have a certain responsibility as Captain during my last year playing basketball for Andover and I want to go out on a good note.”
