Girls First Boat Defeats Defending Champions Exeter

Under the watchful eyes of their grandparents and family members, both the girls and boys crews performed well against their Exeter and Tabor counterparts. The girls defeated defending champion Exeter and throttled Tabor.

The girl’s first boat avenged its loss to Exeter in a two second win over their archrivals. Captain Alex Farrell ’10 called it a “huge win for G1.” Farrell continued, “It proved that we have what it takes to beat Exeter again in two weeks at Interschols. Our entire boat was consistently aggressive throughout the race.” Overall, Farrell said the she is impressed with the 1st boat. She said she is also, “looking forward to having fun while working hard during these last two weeks of crew at Andover.”

Co-Captain Keating ’10 Nets Game-Winner Against Thayer

With 39 seconds to go in a tie game against Thayer, Co-Captain Kyleigh Keating ’10 sent a shot to the back of the net for the game winning goal. This win improved Andover’s stellar record to 9-2-1.

Andover Girls Lacrosse lit the offensive fire early in the Thayer game, storming out to a 3-1 lead backed by strong defense from Mallory Tyler ’12, the goalie, and defenders Haley Scott ’11, Julia Rafferty ’10, Maggie Law ’10, Co-Captain Kitten Sherrill ’10 and Samantha Lawson ’10. Thayer responded immediately netting three consecutive goals and three more later to reach seven goals for the half. Andover rebounded to force turnovers, which created scoring opportunities for the offense. The team scored two more goals in the half, one with only 31 seconds left, which swung the momentum in Andover’s favor at half despite the 7-6 Thayer advantage.

Andover Shut Out By National Powerhouse Deerfield

Despite a 17 save performance by Jay Dolan ’11, Andover suffered a brutal loss to Deerfield this week, getting shut out 12-0. Deerfield is one of the top high school teams in the nation, so despite what was shown on the scoreboard, Andover played a solid game. Andover kept the game close in the first quarter, as the team trailed 1-0 at the end of the period. The Andover attack rifled several good shots on net in the second quarter, but weren’t able to finish and ended the first half behind 3-0. The second half did not go as well for Andover however, as Deerfield wore out the battling Andover squad. “Deerfield is a very deep team with multiple middle lines and defensemen in and out of the game,” said Coach Carr. Captain Bennett Carroccio ’10 Goes Yard Twice to Lead Andover Past NMH

Smashing two home runs, Captain Bennett Carroccio ’10 led the Andover baseball team past Northfield Mount Hermon in the first game of the doubleheader Saturday, 9-2. The team fell in the second game, 4-9, despite great performances from Sam August ’10 and Zac Elder ’11 at the plate. “The pitcher was throwing two seam fastballs all game, so I was sitting on it, and luckily enough, he threw one low and inside, which I turned on. He threw me the same pitch in my last at bat, and I also got a good piece of that one. I was happy to see the home runs provided a spark for the team, because as a team, we haven’t been hitting as well as we should be,” said Carroccio.

Andover Comes Back to Beat Cushing, 7-6

In an exciting week for Andover Softball, the team came from behing against Cushing, closing a four-run gap in the bottom of the seventh to secure the 7-6 win. Against Tabor in the second game Saturday, Tristin Moone ’10 pitched a no-hitter and it a solo shot. Despite her efforts, miscues and a quieted Andover offense resulted in a 1-2 loss.

On Wednesday, Andover regained its momentum, demolishing Exeter 19-0.

In the first game of the doubleheader Saturday, Andover got off to a slow start and allowed Cushing to take the lead 6-2. In the bottom of the 7th, Andover finally strung together the offense necessary to win.

Andover Earns Four Third Set Wins to Shut Out Exeter

Andover Girls Tennis shut out rival Phillips Exeter Academy 9-0 last Saturday. Despite the one-sided score, Andover battled through nine tight matches, four of which went to third set tiebreakers.

“It’s always a good match up with Exeter,” said Coach Martha Grant, who said that she led her team into the match with the mindset that every opponent deserves equal effort. With Co-Captain Eliza Flynn ’10 still sidelined due to injury, Fay Feghali ’12 moved up to play the first singles position. Feghali rallied to an easy 6-3 victory in the first set. Despite falling 2-6 in the second, she came out on top 7-5 in the third set which secured an overall victory.

Katherine Lee ’13 took the court in the second singles position and won in two quick sets, 6-2, 6-2. Elizabeth Kelly ’11 and Co-Captain Stacia Vladimirova ’11 also won two easy sets in the third...



Andover Places Third in Andover Invitational Tournament

Last Sunday Andover Ultimate played in the Andover Invitational Tournament, placed third, improving its season record to 7-1.

“It was great playing in our first tournament of the season. After playing six games in one day, the team now knows what it feels like to play in a tournament atmosphere. We played very well, and hopefully we can carry this tournament success to the Amherst tournament next week, and the New England Tournament later in the season,” said Captain Duncan Crystal ’10.

Andover took the field against Newton North in its first of six games. Earlier in the season Andover dominated Newton North, winning 15-6. Andover Fails to Win Doubles Points In First Two Losses of Season

Without Captain Mark Adamsson ’11 in his normal number one doubles slot, Andover lost its first match of the season against Roxbury Latin on Friday afternoon. “We should have beaten Roxbury Latin. Mark’s absence from doubles hurt us. If we take that doubles match, we win,” said Coach Gregory Wilkin.

Andover normally breezes sthrough the doubles portion of its matches, but on Friday, the team struggled to put together good volleys. Alasdair McClintic ’13 and Hayato Lee ’12 opened doubles play in their first career doubles match and came away with an 8-4 win. Andover quickly went cold after this win, as both the number two and one doubles teams fell to their Roxbury Latin opponents as Andover lost the doubles point.

Captain Austen Novis ’11 Fights Calf Cramp to Finish Fourth

Captain Austen Novis ’11 sprinted across the finish line to capture fourth place for Andover Cycling in the Boys A division this weekend at Gould. Within a few hundred meters of the finish line, Novis was riding in second place until his calf cramped up, but he still managed to earn 72 points for Andover. “Gould was probably the hardest course we will face all year, simply because it has so many hills. In those last few meters, I was really frustrated that my calf cramped up. I was riding second, and I had a legitimate shot at winning,” said Novis.

In a stretched out field, Matthew Lloyd Thomas ’11 and Charles Ganner ’10 finished tenth and eleventh, seven minutes behind the leaders and contributing valuable points to the team. Despite an early flat tire, Yuto Watanabe ’11 managed to climb back into the race and finish 19th....

With Co-Captain Kyleigh Keating ’10 igniting Andover’s offense with six goals, Andover Girls’ Lacrosse cruised to a 12-4 victory at Taft on Saturday, while a resilient mindset and goals from a variety of players allowed for an Andover comeback that ended in an 8-8 tie against Governor’s. These games improved the girls’ record to 6-1-1. Andover’s defense stunned Taft, as aggressive pressure from Maggie Law ’10, co-captain Katherine Sherrill ’10, Haley Scott ’11, Julia Rafferty ’10 and several other Andover defenders led to an interception in the first 30 seconds of the game and a 7-0 Andover advantage at halftime.
