Boys Hockey Glides Past Loomis; Falls to Deerfield

By Mac King

With a win over Loomis, the Andover Boys’ Hockey team ended their slump and skated back into the zone, only to suffer a tough loss to Deerfield.

After dropping their first two games of the season in the span of only a few days last week the Boys’ Hockey team bounced back to win two in a row. However, this past Wednesday, they dropped a heartbreaker to the Big Green of Deerfield.

After beating Brewster Academy last week and brutally trouncing Loomis-Chaffee 8-3 last Saturday afternoon the Andover Blue went on to take on the number one ranked Deerfield Academy team at Deerfield on Wednesday. Although the PA skaters took a 5-2 beating, it must be remembered that the Big Green is among the nation’s best. In this glorious week for the boys’ hockey team Andover outscored their opponents eleven to eight and have bettered their record to...

Lady Blue Squash Nobles; Pulling Off Second Victory

By Julie Bramowitz

Despite what the name may suggest, Noble & Greenough School always seems to be a very personal, very un-noble match. Nevertheless, the Girls’ Varsity Squash finally pulled off their second win of the season, finishing with a decisive score of six games to their measly one. The team continues to be in limbo, with Captain Emily O’Brien ’03 back in action just when Pam Risseeuw ’03 heads out because of medical problems. Slight adjustments to the ladder, including O’Brien at number two and Diana Grace ’05 up at one, and Phoebe Rockwood ’03 filling in at seven, may have been just what the Blue needed to find their groove. Rockwood experienced the only loss of the day, playing against an opponent she characterized as “hoppy.” Bunny-like footwork seemed to do the job, as Rockwood fell in three brief games.

Julie Bramowitz ’03, playing at number six, enjoyed her...

Coming in less than a second behind them was the relay team of Kate Page ’04, Kim Walker ’03, Captain Sarah Demers ’03, and Tracey Zicherman ’03. Hee-jin Chang ’05 destroyed two records in one race. Girls Hockey Plays Tough; Goalies Star Between Pipes

By Kathleen Minahan

The Girls’ Varsity Hockey team is a force to be reckoned with. As the season moves forward, the Big Blue has shown that they have the talent to play against anyone out there, an important lesson, as some of the hardest games of the season are yet to come. After a heart-breaking overtime loss to Lawrence Academy last week, the Big Blue pulled together and produced two strong victories over the weekend. Wednesday, however, did not hold the same fate for the girls. With a 2-1 record on the week, it was a success, but the girls are striving for more.

On Friday night, the girls played the first of their two weekend games against Groton Academy. During the first period, the Blue took thirteen shots on net, and did not allow Groton any. The team dominated on both ends, skating with passion. The girls chased down...

Boys Track Tests Waters At Harvard Invitational

By Jon Hillman

It is not every day that Andover students get a chance to compete against, and also defeat, the college athletes that they are training to become. This past Sunday, at Harvard University, the Boys’ Track Team did just that. While others might have been easily intimidated, Andover’s track team, the only high school team in attendance, was eager to see how they stacked up against the big boys. Unfazed by the prospect of competing against far more experienced runners, Andover's distance team definitely showed up at Harvard to do one thing. Compete. The largest group of Andover athletes ran in heat 2 of the men’s one mile run. Adam Kapor ’04 led the way with a 4:50.76, finishing in 17th place. John Freker ’04 finished right on his heels with a time of 4:50.91 and 18th place. Chris Lanterman ’03 placed 23rd with a time of 4:56.72....

Girls BBall Demolishes Two Opponents; Deerfield and Nobles Fall to the Big Blue

By Alison Murphy

The Girls’ Basketball team is bringing it all together. This past week, the girls played two winning games that demonstrated how much effort they have been putting in at practice. They demolished Deerfield 58-22 and sent Nobles home disappointed with a decisive 53-36 victory over the squad . Saturday’s away game against Deerfield was marked by Lady Blue improvements. Even though Deerfield provided little competition, it gave the girls court time to work on their team goals. Cortney Tetrault ’03, Danielle Vardaro ’03, Meg Coffin ’03, Mimi Hanley ’04, and Kat Conlon ’04 started for Andover and immediately went to work on scoring some early points. Throughout the game, the girls played up to their potential. Turnovers were limited to 15, rebounds were more frequent, and shooting percentages were high. The girls held an aggressive defense and kept the game pace high; Deerfield was unable to make...

2 Goals From Adams ’03 Lead Hockey to Tie

By Mac King

After dropping their first game of the season to Saint Sebastian’s last week, the Andover Boys’ Hockey team has been in somewhat of a funk. Coming off the tough loss against “St. Seb’s” the Big Blue racked up a tie against Governor Dummer Academy on Friday, a loss against Noble and Greenough on Saturday, and their first win in four games against Brewster Academy on Wednesday. All in all the Boys on Ice have scored fifty-nine goals this season and goalies Cory Schneider ’04 and Matt Ward ’06 have let in only 23. The Andover Blue record now stands at 10-2-3.

Andover got on the board early in the first period against Governor Dummer when Joe Adams ’03 received a pass from Tommy Dignard ’06 and took a wrist shot which sailed, glove side, just out of the goalie’s reach, resulting in a goal. The rest of the...

Despite Losing Streak, Wrestling Remains Optimistic For Future

By Phil Caruso

Loomis. Belmont Hill. North Andover. The Wrestling team had known all season long that this week would be grueling, facing three of New England’s best prep school teams in only five days. First up for PA was Loomis, the defending New England Champs whi are currently ranked first in the Class A with a record of 11-0 going into the tri-meet. The meet started badly for Andover as the Big Blue found themselves in a 15-0 hole after only three matches. After taking a forfeit at 160 lbs, Erik Trautman ’03 got PA back on the winning track with a pin, followed by John Atay’s ’03 upset win over a tough Loomis opponent. Still, Andover was losing 33-18 and in need of a quick turnaround to even the meet. Answering the call was Gabe Worgaftik ’06, scoring an upset victory over his opponent with a third period...

Boys Squash Dominates St. Paul’s School in Upset

By Elliot Beck

In another epic match of utter destruction, the PA squash team managed to better its debut defeat of Harvard’s JV with an even stronger showing against St. Paul’s on Wednesday. After another round of challenge matches on Tuesday, with results allowing for another reshuffling of the team, the team was once again unsure of how well they were going to do.

They were beaten last year by St. Paul’s, 4-3. A small margin, but a defeat nonetheless. Therefore, when they showed up, the boys were surprised to hear that the SPS numbers 1, 3 and 5 were missing from their line-up for the day. Whether it was good or bad luck is hard to tell, but it did allow for a phenomenal victory. Not a game was dropped, and neither were any even close. For many, matches lasted only about 15 minutes. The players were disappointed, for although...

Lady Swimmers Win Big; Big Blue Slams Hoggers

By Brittany Kaiser

The Lady Blue dominates in the pool. The Andover squad has not lost an event yet, taking victories in every event for the second weekend in a row. Having tallied two in the W column thus far, the Big Blue looks to be unbeatable. Even though last Saturday’s meet against Northfield Mount Hermon proved to be an easy win for the Andover squad, the girls still have a lot of work to do. Last Saturday, PA’s Varsity swimming and diving team made the trek to NMH to face off against the Hoggers. After a long two-hour bus ride, the team jumped right in to begin warming up. Coming off of a successful meet against Loomis, the girls were more than excited for their first meet in a 25 yard pool. The morning could not have started out better with a win in the 200 medley relay. The...
