Winkenwerder ’10 Nets Game-Winner in Overtime vs. Exeter

Published on May 27, 2010 in CXXXIII no. 13Will Winkenwerder ’10 netted a goal in double overtime against Exeter this Saturday to give Andover a 7-6 win in the final game of the season. This win allowed Andover’s record to just barely creep over the .500 mark, bringing it to 8-7 on the year. Andover dug itself into a hole at the start of the game, as the team trailed Exeter 4-1 after the first quarter of play. Andover made adjustments in the second quarter, and the defense started to lock-down, while the offense did a better job controlling possessions and protecting the ball. Andover was able to inch its way back to end the half down 4-3. Coach Cline Retires After 30 Years

Published on May 27, 2010 in CXXXIII no. 13After 30 years of teaching and coaching at Andover, Coach Andy Cline ended his career with a bang in a 5-2 win against Exeter. Over 23 seasons as head coach of Varsity Baseball, his team earned 250 victories, suffered only 130 defeats and won seven league championships.
Captain Bennett Carroccio ’10 said, “Saturday’s game was the perfect ending to our season. When we won, the feeling was far greater and more fulfilling than I would have ever imagined. Coach Cline deserves to end his coaching career victoriously in front of a group of athletes that love him.”
A maple tree was planted beyond the left field fence to thank the coach for his dedication to the school and baseball program. Alumni, friends and family gathered to watch the ceremonies beforehand and see their beloved coach’s final victory.

Published on May 27, 2010 in CXXXIII no. 13After a heart-breaking bottom of the seventh loss to Exeter at the Central New England Prep School Playoffs, the Andover baseball team took its revenge on its rival this past Saturday, winning 5-2. Tom Palleschi ’12, who pitched two scoreless innings and went two for three at the plate said, “With this being Coach Cline’s final game in an Andover uniform, everybody on the team worked as hard as they could to give him the proper send off. We knew that a win against Exeter would be the perfect way for him to go out, and we were pumped we gave it to him.”

Every year at the end of the season, Phillips Andover and Andover High School compete on the Andover High turf to close out the spring season. Andover defeated its cross-town rivals for the second time this season to bring home to title. Earlier this spring, Andover and AHS met during the Andover Invitational. The first meeting of the two teams resulted in a 12-6 win for Andover. “Knowing it was our last game of the season, we had to give it our all and go out in style. It’s kind of AHS’s showcase game, and we knew they would bring it. We just took it the momentum right from the start and never let up,” said Josh T. Feng ’10.

Track Teams Complete Perfect Seasons With Win Over Exeter

Published on May 27, 2010 in CXXXIII no. 13In the perfect finish to a perfect season, Andover Track ran away with the victory in Saturday’s meet against Exeter. The boys team racked up 106 points compared to Exeter’s 39, while the girls team won 86-59, and three athletes— Whitney Glick ’11, Allison Morrison ’12 and Malcolm Mason-Rodriguez—broke Andover-Exeter records.
Whitney Glick ’11 broke the school record for the pole vault, which she had set earlier in the season, with a jump of 9’ 8”. Captain Colleen Flanagan ’10 and Lydia Kaprelian ’13 finished second and third, to sweep the event.
Allison Morrison ’12, the girl MVP of the season, set an Andover-Exeter record of 5’ 4.25” in the high jump, and won the long jump and 300-meter hurdles.
Malcolm Mason-Rodriguez ‘11, boys MVP, shattered the Andover-Exeter triple jump record with a 47’ 10” series of jumps. He also won the high jump and long jump.

Published on May 27, 2010 in CXXXIII no. 13Andover Girls Lacrosse stormed to a 9-4 home victory over Exeter, finishing the season with an impressive 12-2-1 record. Co-Captain Kyleigh Keating said, “The Exeter game was truly the perfect way to end the season. We had a great run and then to beat Exeter solidly like that was unbelievable.”
Goalie Mallory Tyler ’12 played a big role in the victory as she knocked down 10 Exeter shots in net. With Tyler in net and outstanding defense from Co-Captain Katherine Sherrill ’10, Julia Rafferty ’10, Maggie Law ’10, and Sam Lawson ’10, Andover limited Exeter scoring to only two goals in each half. This aggressive defense has remained impenetrable all year, holding opponents to only 102 goals over the course of the season with Sarah Schuchardt ’11 and Tyler in net, while generating turnovers from which the offense has produced 173 goals this season.

Published on May 27, 2010 in CXXXIII no. 13Andover softball steamrolled Exeter on Saturday, as the team won both games of the doubleheader by a 10-run mercy rule after five innings of play. “We went into the games knowing that Exeter was not the best competition we had faced all season. However, it was still Andover-Exeter, and you have to respect your opponents - if a team is going to have the best game of their season, there’s a good chance it will be against their rivals,” said Shannon McSweeney ’11.
Tristin Moone ’10 ended her Andover career with an bang, pitching in the first game and facing only 14 batters in five innings. Only one Exeter batter reached base after being hit by a pitch, but was soon thrown out at second on a laser by Co-Captain Sarah Onorato ’11. Moone struck out 9 and walked none.

Published on May 27, 2010 in CXXXIII no. 13Andover Girls Tennis battled against highly competitive opponents for a third place finish in the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council Tournament last weekend. Hotchkiss and Pingree were the only two squads to place higher than Andover in the fifteen team pool.
Katherine Lee ’13 took the court for Andover in the first singles position, facing nationally ranked player Dayna Lord from Kingswood-Oxford. Lee suffered an 1-8 loss, forcing her into the loser’s bracket of the tournament. Lee rebounded and beat her next opponent 8-2. However, her 4-8 loss in the third match eliminated her from the tournament. Fay Feghali ’12 played in the second singles position and she finished in fourth place overall in her draw. She started her first match against the fourth seed and won the tiebreaker 7-5 for an 8-7 match win.

Peter Heidrich ’11 and Captain Mark Adamsson ’11 participated in the top singles bracket, and Alasdair McClintic ’13 and Michael Kontaxis ’11 competed in the second singles bracket. While this was an individual tournament, the whole team went up to Choate to watch the games and cheer on their teammates. “We were playing for ourselves but representing the school at the same time so it was fun to have the team supporting me there,” said McClintic. McClintic was the huge surprise of the tournament, winning his first three matches before succumbing to a Senior from Belmont Hill in the finals. “After having such a close first match (8-6), I really thought that I wouldn’t get very far if I continued playing like that. Captain Alex Farrell ’10 said, “It was the best day, and I couldn’t think of a better way to end my Senior year. Before the race began, we talked about how we were doing this for not only ourselves, but also for Coach Green and every girl who has rowed in this program before us.”
The girls enjoyed an incredible day as all three boats placed in the top two. In impressive fashion, G1 won its race, beating both Kent and Exeter by three and nine seconds, respectively.
