Andover Girls Hockey suffered two heartbreaking losses against Tabor Academy and Noble & Greenough School; the games marked the team’s 11th consecutive loss.

In its game against Tabor two Wednesdays ago, Andover held tight for the first two periods but broke down in the third and allowed two goals for a 2-0 loss.

“We had a bunch of scoring opportunities, but our power plays did not go as well as we wanted to, and we ended up missing the net on a lot of shot,” said Sara Merker ’15.

Merker continued, “[In the third period,] Tabor discovered our fore check and used their defense to skate the puck out of our offensive zone, making it difficult to get good scoring opportunities.”

Andover could not answer back, as the team struggled with finishing its offensive opportunities for the duration of the game.

The game marked the fifth time in Andover’s last six games that Andover has been held scoreless.

“I think if we focus more on our defensive zone coverage as well as our neutral zone play the goals will happen,” said Merker.

The following Wednesday, Andover fell to the top-ranked and undefeated Noble & Greenough School squad 5-1.

“I thought that our defensive coverage was pretty good, but our fore check wasn’t that strong,” said Hannah Sorkin ’14.

Nobles came out hungry, scoring just three minutes into the game to take a one-goal lead.

Nobles added on two more goals in the first period to achieve a 3-0 lead.

Andover finally found the back of the net in the end of the first period and cut Nobles’ lead to 3-1 going into the second.

Despite Andover’s goal, Nobles remained unflustered. Nobles piled on two more goals: one in the second and the other in the third and reached a final score of 5-1.

Despite the loss, goalie and Co-Captain Corinne Rivard ’12 held her own against a relentless Nobles offense.

“Corinne played amazingly; the goals that went in really weren’t her fault. She even saved a 3-on-0 once,” said Sorkin.

Andover’s prolonged losing streak carries on, and the team has scored just four goals in its last nine games.

“It is not easy to understand why we have been on a losing streak, especially when we have a very talented team of girls who skate their hardest every game. We are a skilled team, but also a young team; over half of the team, including six new Juniors and two new Lowers, have never skated together until this season,” said Caroline Garrity ’15.

Andover will look to end its drought today against Milton.
