Exeter football had their most successful game of the season, narrowly defeating Phillips Academy Andover in an intense match up culminating deep in the fourth quarter. The Andover team was prevented from playing because the administration was afraid many Exeter player would be injured against such fierce and dominating competition. Instead, Andover was forced to field their JV Girls Cross Country team instead. Russian PG Igor said, “We not notice that this wasn’t the real team until they no score on their first drive. Me thinks now the lack of pads should have given it away.”

The game was even for quite a while with neither team attaining a first down through the first three quarters of the game. The stand-in Andover quarterback said, “At first I found it difficult playing this new sport, since the farthest i can throw the ball is 10 yards, but once I figured out that was twice as far as the Exeter quarterback could throw, I really gained some self-confidence.”

In the fourth quarter Exeter’s offense really started to get going after a receiver managed a gain of 17 yards when two Andover cornerbacks left the field due to a mixture of boredom and pity. However, the drive was cut short when Andover managed to overpower Exeter’s defensive line on three consecutive plays, sacking the Exeter quarterback each time. Later in the quarter Andover found themselves with the ball at the 50, but when the Andover running back received the hand-off she began running towards her own end zone in order to avoid awkward, unattractive Exeter defenders. The safety gave Exeter their first win of their season with the final score at 2-0. An Exeter linebacker described the game winning play. He said, “When I saw that Andover girl running the wrong way, I knew this was the break we had been waiting for all season. As she stood in the end zone dancing, I tried to tackle her but slipped and missed. Luckily she didn’t notice, and I was eventually able to pull her down by her shorts. I’m very proud of our team and think if we keep this up, we might even get a touchdown next week in our game against Exeter preschool.
