Athlete of the Week: Ralph Skinner ’16 – Spring Track & Field

Winning every race he has competed in this season, Ralph Skinner ’16 has quickly stepped up as one of Andover Boys Track’s top runners. Hailing from Lowell, Mass., Skinner runs the 800-Meter and 1500-Meter races. Being a very versatile runner, he runs other distances depending on the needs of the team. Skinner’s hard work and dedication have paid off as he currently holds the third most points overall for Andover. His early success this season has earned him the title of The Phillipian’s Athlete of the Week.

How has your running improved throughout your years here at Andover?

I’ve certainly benefitted from some terrific coaching, and I have stayed highly committed to my training both in and out of practice. I spend a lot of time stretching and strengthening, as well as maintaining healthy eating and sleeping habits in addition to running. As a result, my track times have continued to drop over the years.

What is your biggest strength as a runner? What sets you apart from other runners?

Probably my legs. They’re pretty strong. Also, I’m happy with the way I’ve fought through injuries – spending hours and hours at the gym and in the pool has instilled in me an intense drive for success. I think my race strategy has also developed quite well as I’ve grown more experienced.

What are some personal/team goals you have for the season?

The overarching goal is to bring home a team title at Interschols. On the way I’d love to get my times as low as possible in my events, and score some points in the championship races. Helping the younger athletes develop is also not a responsibility I take lightly.
