Experienced Andover Squad Seeks Redemption

Andover Boys Tennis looks for redemption this season after a tough loss to Hotchkiss in last year’s New England semifinal. Andover hopes to see big contribution from its four returning seniors.

Co-Captains Peter Heidrich ’11 and Mark Adamsson ’11, Michael Kontaxis ‘11 and Hunter Schlacks ’11. Kontaxis and Schlacks add to Andover’s already formidable lineup with experience.

Kontaxis is excited about this year’s prospects. He said, “Since lower year, we’ve (Class of ’11) all been looking forward to this year. If we give it all we got, I see no reason we couldn’t win it all this year as a team.”

Heidrich, burst onto the scene last year as a new upper, reaching the semifinals in the A draw at New Englands, while Adamsson also had major contributions.

Alastair McClintic ’13 cites the team’s depth and experience as a crucial tenant of the team’s potential. He said, “There is a lot of experience on the team that will serve well in close matches and at New Englands. We have a very deep line up this year that will be tough to beat.”

Several newcomers to the Varsity A team are ready to make a resounding impact on this team’s success. James Heaney ’14 is “is poised to challenge up,” said Coach Greg Wilkin, and is currently 5th on the ladder.

Coach Wilkin, while he is confident in his team’s talent level and experience, is wary of the stiff competition throughout New England. He said, “We never know what dangers await from other teams, especially the other big, international-level schools like Choate, Exeter and Hotchkiss, who can bring in top players very quickly and transform their teams.”

In terms of improvement, Wilkin wants the team to “shore up the doubles play beneath [the] strong number-one team of Adamsson and Heidrich.”

The team opens their schedule with a match at BB&N next Wednesday, at 3 pm. Their first match at home is on April 29th vs. Roxbury Latin, and the team closes out the season with a three-game home stand, before competing in New Englands.
