PA Runs Past Chelmsford; Latina ’04 Leads Sprinters

The Lady Blue are back on track. After two consecutive losses, the Girls’ Indoor Track team was victorious at last week’s meet against Chelmsford. Jackie Latina ’04 started the day off with a bang, as she easily won the long jump with a 14’11.25” jump. Rebecca Howe’s ’06 14’ 4.5” jump placed her third. The Big Blue’s lone high jumper, Cassie Tognoni ’05, jumped 4’8” for a second place finish. As usual, Erin O’Hern ’03 took a blue ribbon in the shot put with a 32’5” throw. Nicole George ’04 threw 25’2” for second place. The one mile started off the running events. Lissie Robie ’04 finished second at 5:46.2. Robie also came back to win the 1000 yard run in a close race. With a time of 2:59.4, she finished only a few steps ahead of the second place finisher, a speedy runner from Chelmsford. In the 600 yard run, Howe had an amazing race, passing an opponent right before the finish line to win with 1:39.8. Andover swept the two mile, with Chelmsford fielding no runners in the event. Hoppy Maffione ’04 crossed the line first at 13:08.7, and Loui Itoh ’03 followed in second at 14.09.5. Anne Riordan ’03 was still out with an injury, but Captain Katie Dlesk ’03 and Marty Shmure ’06 took care of the 50 yard hurdles. Dlesk won in 7.6 seconds, with Schmure taking third with 8.1 seconds. Dlesk and Latina tied for first place in the 50 yard dash, both in 6.5 seconds. The 300 was an amazing race to watch, as Andover took all three places, winning three heats in a row. Dlesk won again, crossing the line at 38.6 seconds. Latina was next, followed by McBride. The best race is always the 4×400 relay, and, this meet, it left a smile one every Andover athlete in attendance. Early on in the race it became clear that the goal would not be to beat Chelmsford’s team, but instead to lap them. Latina, Tognoni, and McBride began the race speedily. Dlesk, anchoring the relay, passed her opponent right before the finish line. Their 4:25.5 was also the relay team’s season best. The girls now look forward to next week when the whole team will travel up to Exeter for the biggest and final meet of the season.
